Madsen Engineering converted and extended two existing four-story buildings in Bay Ridge into one commercial space for a new Victoria’s Secret store. The existing floors and the interior masonry walls between the four buildings were removed during the gut renovation. New floors were built at new elevations. The existing exterior side masonry walls were preserved and connected to the new interior structural floors while the existing roof structure remained.
The ground floor structure is composite concrete on metal deck supported by steel beams and columns and the upper floors consist of cement board flooring on light gauge joists supported by steel beams columns and new/existing masonry bearing walls. The foundation is reinforced concrete footings. An extension was built in the rear yard, with new concrete masonry unit (CMU) bearing walls connected to the existing brick walls. A new lateral system was designed for the building. Full temporary shoring and bracing of the existing structure during construction as well as work staging were provided separately for the contractor.
